From Feeling Unsure to Finding My Path: How resilience and an Apprenticeship Shaped My Career

Into Business and Administration Apprenticeships By Sophie Burgan Published on June 19

For a long time, I didn’t really know what I wanted to do with my future. I knew I wanted to work hard and build a career I could be proud of, but I didn’t have a clear job title or plan in mind- and that used to worry me. Everyone around me seemed to know what they wanted to do or at least what industry they wanted to take on, while I was still figuring myself out. What I’ve learned since is that not knowing straight away is definitely not a weakness; sometimes it’s the start of discovering what’s right for you.

Throughout secondary school and sixth form I was often seen as an average student. My predicted grades reflected that, and for a while, I believed that maybe that was all I was capable of. Despite this, I always tried to surround myself with things I genuinely enjoyed. I chose subjects that interested me rather than ones I felt pressured into taking, which made a huge difference to my motivation. I studied a BTEC Business Course, which was equivalent to one and a half A Levels, as well as A Level Psychology and Core Maths. Business quickly became something I felt confident in, and it helped me realise I enjoyed practical, real-world learning rather than just theory.

One of the hardest parts of my time at school and sixth form wasn’t academic- it was social. Even though I’ve always loved meeting new people, I didn’t really have a solid group of friends. Many people already knew each other from previous schools, and I often felt like the outsider trying to find my place. There were days that felt especially hard and I would sit in my car alone because it felt easier than feeling uncomfortable. There were mornings when I didn’t want ogo in at all, but I still did. Showing up, even when it felt difficult, ended up teaching e resilience without me even realising it at the time.

Instead of letting those feelings hold me back, I used them as motivation. I wanted to prove, mainly to myself, that I was capable of more than the expectations that had been placed on me. I focused on my work, revised consistently, and put real effort into my studies. Despite being predicted mostly D grades, I pushed myself not to settle. When results day came, it was one of my proudest moments. I achieved A*A in Business and a C in Psychology, which showed me that hard work and determination can truly change outcomes.

As I started thinking about what came next, I realised that the traditional university route wasn’t for me. Even though it’s a great option for many people, I didn’t feel ready to commit to more years of full‑time education without practical experience. I wanted to learn on the job, develop real skills, and start building my confidence in a professional environment. That’s when I began looking into apprenticeships and realised just how many opportunities were available.

While searching online, I came across a Siemens Mobility apprenticeship advertised on the government website. I didn’t overthink it – I read the description, it felt right, and I decided to apply. I was lucky enough to have a successful interview, and not long after, I started my Level 3 Business Administration apprenticeship in August 2025. From the moment I began, I knew I had made the right decision, and I can honestly say I would never turn back.

Since starting my apprenticeship at Siemens Mobility, I’ve already had opportunities I never expected so early in my career. I was featured in a Siemens magazine shared across offices in the UK, where I spoke about my apprenticeship journey — something I never would have imagined doing at 19. This opportunity came after a senior member of the business recommended me, which was a huge confidence boost and made me realise that my hard work was being recognised. I’ve also had the chance to travel independently across the UK for work, including places like Manchester, York, London, and Northampton, which has helped me grow not just professionally but personally as well.

Navigating new environments, meeting new people, and representing myself and my role independently has pushed me far outside my comfort zone, but in the best way possible. These experiences have shown me how much you can achieve early on when you’re willing to say yes to opportunities and believe in yourself, even when you’re still learning. I’m incredibly grateful to now be working for such a supportive and well‑respected company. Being part of Siemens Mobility has helped me grow both professionally and personally, and it finally feels like my career is only just beginning. The learning environment is encouraging, and I’m constantly developing new skills while gaining valuable experience. Starting my first proper job was intimidating at first, but I quickly realised that everyone has to start somewhere, and asking questions is all part of the learning process.

One of the biggest reasons I would genuinely recommend an apprenticeship is the ability to earn while you learn. Being paid while gaining qualifications and real work experience removes so much pressure. And let’s be honest – who wouldn’t like being paid while learning new skills, instead of finishing education with debt? An apprenticeship has allowed me to be financially independent, gain confidence, and understand how a real workplace operates, all at the same time. Looking back, my journey has taught me so much about resilience. Resilience doesn’t mean never struggling; it means continuing even when things feel uncomfortable. From feeling like the outsider at school, to pushing myself academically, to stepping into the working world and making new lifelong friends, each challenge shaped who I am today. The moments where I didn’t feel confident were often the moments that helped me grow the most. For anyone who hasn’t landed their first job or apprenticeship yet and feels unsure about what to do next, my biggest advice is not to compare your journey to anyone else’s. Everyone moves at their own pace, and that’s completely okay. You don’t need to have everything figured out straight away. Try different things, research your options, and choose the path that feels right for you – not the one you feel pressured into taking. I’d also encourage anyone considering their next steps to seriously look into apprenticeships. They’re not a second option or a backup plan; they’re a positive and powerful route into a career. You gain experience, build confidence, earn money, and learn valuable skills that will stay with you for life. Most importantly, you discover what you’re capable of.

If there’s one thing my journey has taught me, it’s that simply showing up matters. Even on the hard days, even when you feel unsure or out of place, turning up for yourself is a step forward. I did that, and it led me to an opportunity I’m truly grateful for.
