From an early age, I never imagined that a traditional university education would be the right path for me. While I was in secondary school, I accompanied my older sister to several university open days. Although I appreciated the opportunity to experience campus life, I struggled to picture myself studying in that environment. It never felt like a place where I would thrive or achieve my full potential.

When the time came for me to explore my own post-18 options, I approached university open days with an open mind. I encouraged myself to remain optimistic and considered every opportunity carefully. However, despite my best efforts, the same feeling remained—I wanted a career that was practical, hands-on, and allowed me to learn through real-world experience rather than solely through classroom-based education.

Determined to explore every possible avenue, I attended my school's careers fair during Year 12. There, I met representatives from a local accountancy firm who introduced me to their work experience programme. They encouraged me to apply, and I was delighted to be accepted.

That week completely transformed my perspective.

I was properly introduced to the concept of apprenticeships. I had the opportunity to speak directly with current apprentices who openly shared their experiences, explained how they balanced work and study, and answered every question I had. Listening to people who had once been in my position made the pathway feel achievable rather than intimidating.

By the end of the placement, I left with absolute clarity about what I wanted. I developed an unwavering determination to secure an accountancy apprenticeship before completing my A Levels. For the first time, I had a clear vision of my future and a genuine sense of purpose.

I remember asking myself a simple question:

"Why not me?"

I knew I had the ability to succeed if I was prepared to work hard enough. Rather than waiting for opportunities to come to me, I decided to take ownership of my future and actively build the career I wanted.

From that moment onwards, I immersed myself in every opportunity available. I attended networking events, personal development workshops and careers seminars to broaden my understanding of the profession while developing my confidence and communication skills.

Balancing apprenticeship applications alongside A-Level studies proved to be one of the most challenging periods of my education. Every employer had a different recruitment process, with many applications taking several hours to complete before progressing to online assessments, numeracy tests and multiple interview stages. Managing these alongside revision required discipline, resilience and careful organisation.

One of the biggest decisions I made was choosing not to apply to university. Although there were degree courses that interested me, I knew that pursuing a university education simply because it was considered the conventional route was not the right decision for me. It was undoubtedly a risk, but it was an informed one based on what I genuinely wanted from my future.

After months of applications, assessments and interviews, my persistence was finally rewarded. Just a few weeks before sitting my first A-Level examination, I received the apprenticeship offer I had been working towards and knowing that all of my efforts had paid off was an incredible feeling.

Only a few weeks after completing my final A-Level exam, I began my role in July 2024. From my very first day, I was welcomed into a supportive and encouraging team whose guidance has been instrumental in both my personal and professional development.

One aspect that particularly stood out to me was the trust my employer placed in me from the outset. I was given the opportunity to choose both my training provider and the professional qualification I wished to pursue. After speaking with colleagues, other apprentices and researching online student communities, I chose Kaplan as my training provider and enrolled onto the AAT Level 3 qualification.

Naturally, I was uncertain about the level of difficulty and what to expect from studying while working full-time. Like many apprentices, I experienced moments of self-doubt. Ironically, I began with what I considered to be the most challenging unit, Management Accounting which initially tested both my confidence and resilience.

Rather than allowing those concerns to become barriers, I sought support whenever I needed it. I regularly spoke with my line manager and my Kaplan Talent Coach about areas I found challenging. Those conversations reinforced an important lesson: asking for help is not a weakness—it is a strength that accelerates learning and professional growth.Through consistent effort, disciplined revision and determination, I successfully passed every assessment on the first try.

The final stage of my apprenticeship was the End Point Assessment, consisting of both a knowledge assessment and a one-hour professional discussion based upon my portfolio of evidence I put together throughout the programme.

The professional discussion was undoubtedly the assessment I found most daunting. Speaking for an extended period with an independent assessor whom I had never previously met required confidence, composure and the ability to clearly articulate both my technical knowledge and practical workplace experience.

Receiving my results remains one of the proudest moments of my career to date.I achieved a distinction with a perfect score of 100% in my professional discussion, demonstrating not only accurate technical knowledge but also the ability to evaluate my experiences, communicate effectively and provide well-reasoned responses throughout the assessment. In addition, I achieved 90% in my combined knowledge assessment, covering all four AAT modules. These results enabled me to achieve an overall Distinction in my AAT Level 3 Apprenticeship.

Looking back, I am incredibly proud of what I achieved. Every evening spent revising after work, every challenging assessment and every question I hesitated to ask ultimately contributed to my success. Those experiences reinforced the importance of perseverance, curiosity and maintaining a growth mindset.

Following the completion of my apprenticeship, I successfully applied for AAT Bookkeeping Membership, earning the professional designation AATQB. I also became entitled to use the post-nominals CAA (Certificate of Advanced Apprenticeship) through the Association of Apprentices.

These achievements represent far more than letters after my name—they symbolise the commitment, resilience and determination that have shaped my journey. To remind myself how far I have come and to stay motivated for the future, I proudly display my certificates framed above my desk.

Alongside my professional development, I have been passionate about encouraging other young people to consider apprenticeships.

Last year, I returned to my former sixth form college to deliver a presentation about apprenticeships and share my own experiences. It was incredibly rewarding to answer students' questions and help them better understand the opportunities available outside the traditional university route.

I was honoured to be invited back again this year to speak to the current Year 12 cohort. Being able to inspire students who may be uncertain about their future, just as I once was, has become one of the most fulfilling aspects of my journey.

Outside of work, I volunteer as a Befriender with Age UK, providing regular companionship and emotional support to individuals experiencing loneliness, isolation or significant life changes.

This role has broadened my perspective enormously. It has strengthened my empathy, developed my interpersonal skills and taught me the importance of active listening, patience and meaningful conversation. These qualities have not only enhanced my volunteering but have also positively influenced the way I interact with colleagues, clients and professional contacts within my workplace.

I am currently studying towards my AAT Level 4 qualification, where the increased technical complexity has presented a fresh set of challenges. Despite this, I remain committed to maintaining the same high standards I set for myself throughout Level 3.

Looking further ahead, my long-term ambition is to qualify through the combined ACA and CTA pathway. Having developed an interest in personal tax, I believe this specialism provides valuable insight and a distinctive perspective that complements broader accountancy expertise. I am excited by the prospect of continuing to expand both my technical knowledge and professional capabilities throughout my career.

Reflecting on my journey so far, one lesson stands out above all others: opportunities rarely arrive fully formed—you have to be willing to seek them out, embrace them and make the most of them.

My advice to any young person considering their future is simple: never underestimate what you are capable of achieving. Take advantage of every opportunity, ask questions, speak to people already working in your chosen profession and remain curious. Every conversation, every experience and every challenge has the potential to shape your future.

Most importantly, believe in your own potential. The path may not always be straightforward, but with determination, resilience and a willingness to keep learning, you can build a career that is both fulfilling and rewarding.
