New Beginnings: The Ups and Downs of Moving Away for an Apprenticeship

Introduction: The Big Decision

When I was 18, I was faced with a decision that many young people struggle with — what comes next? My A-Levels were still unfinished, and while many of my friends already knew exactly what they wanted to do, I had no clear path ahead of me. Should I take a gap year? Go to university? Or try an apprenticeship? The uncertainty felt overwhelming at times. Little did I know, though, that this uncertainty would eventually lead me to make one of the most life-changing decisions of my young adult life: moving from the North of England to London to pursue a degree apprenticeship.

At first, I didn’t have a plan. The idea of moving into a huge city, far from my home, was both thrilling and terrifying. I knew that I would be leaving behind my friends and family. But I had already experienced what it felt like to move away from everything I knew when I moved from a small village in Poland to England at the age of 10. I had learned first-hand what it felt like to be homesick, to leave behind family and friends, and to start over in a new place. Reflecting on that experience helped me face the decision to move to London for my apprenticeship. I realised that sometimes in life, you need to take risks and make big decisions that will change your future. When I moved to England, I knew it was a step forward for me and my future — and that same mindset helped me take the leap to London. The idea of making a move that could positively shape my future was always in the back of my mind.

Discovering the Right Fit

After months of applying to different apprenticeships and doing extensive research, I knew that an apprenticeship was the right choice for me. But how do you know if an apprenticeship is the right fit for you? If you’re someone who is good at multitasking, managing your time effectively, and can handle stress, it might just be the perfect fit.

During my A-Levels, I worked part-time, which helped me develop the skills needed for an apprenticeship. This was an unexpected advantage because I was already practicing time management, communication, and problem-solving before even starting my apprenticeship.

I come from a background where opportunities weren’t as abundant as in London, but my supportive parents have always been my greatest encouragement. As I already mentioned, I was born in a small village in Poland, and at the age of 10, I moved to a town in Northern England. While I love where I grew up, the career prospects weren’t as great compared to London. Now, here I am, living in London with my partner, who decided to move with me at 19!

To anyone in a similar situation, I urge you to take that leap forward and get out of your comfort zone. It’s worth it, and you’ll find your people who will support you along the way. You owe it to yourself to take that first step.

The Challenges: Homesickness, New Friendships, and Imposter Syndrome

One of the biggest challenges I encountered six months into my apprenticeship and move to London was the difficulty of making new friends. I didn’t realise how challenging it would be to meet new people and build a support network. Despite having my partner with me, I still found myself missing my family and my home friends. I’ve always had a close relationship with my parents, and being away from them has been tough, especially when the demands of work sometimes leave me with little time to even call.

But here's the silver lining: the best way to overcome this challenge is by focusing on growth. Through learning and embracing new experiences, you naturally find your friends. As time went on, I realised that finding a balance between hobbies, work, and family time was essential to feeling grounded.

Imposter syndrome was another huge challenge at the start. I found myself constantly questioning whether I truly belonged in my role, whether I was too young or not qualified enough. These thoughts troubled me for a while. But over time, I learned that imposter feelings weren't unique to me. Many people, regardless of age or experience, feel it. In fact, overcoming this doubt became a powerful part of my growth, and I realised that the very fact I was questioning myself meant I was committed to doing my best, striving to improve, and stepping out of my comfort zone — all signs that I was evolving and pushing forward.

The Rewards of Taking Risks

Looking back now, moving to London for an apprenticeship was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. The challenges I faced — from imposter syndrome to the difficulty of adjusting to a new city — taught me essential life skills like time management, self-reliance, and problem-solving.

Professionally, my apprenticeship provided invaluable hands-on experience that university just couldn’t match. I gained both technical skills and soft skills. This program has not only set me on a clear career path but also gave me the confidence to navigate my future with certainty.

Advice for Anyone at a Crossroads

If you’re reading this and find yourself unsure of what to do next, here’s my advice: keep your options open. You don’t need to have everything figured out at 18 (or even later). Exploring different paths is okay, and you may find that one path suits you better than you expected.

For me, the apprenticeship route was the perfect balance of education and hands-on experience. Don’t be afraid to take that leap into the unknown. Moving to a huge city at such a young age was daunting, but it helped me grow in ways I never anticipated. You’ll face challenges, but you’ll also discover strengths you didn’t know you had.

Remember: there is no “right” path. What matters is that you’re moving forward, doing something that excites you. Apprenticeships offer so much more than just qualifications. They provide career experience, industry connections, and real-world skills that can unlock countless opportunities in the future.

Final Thoughts:

Wherever you are on your journey — whether you’re uncertain about what to do next or already on your path — remember that every challenge is an opportunity for growth. Change may feel overwhelming, but it’s also where the magic happens. Embrace the uncertainty. Your future is waiting, and if an apprenticeship is part of that future, know that it’s an incredible way to kickstart your career and personal development.
