No Degree, No Problem: How I built my career through Apprenticeships
I received my GCSE results just as the world was beginning to emerge from the COVID period. Like many others, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do next, so I chose to go to sixth form. It felt like the natural next step, but after one year, I realised it wasn’t the right fit for me.
So that summer, I began researching my options. That’s when I stumbled across apprenticeships. As I only had GCSEs at the time, I naturally began applying for Level 3 apprenticeship positions via the Government Apprenticeship website. I looked at companies both big and small within a 50-mile radius of where I lived - from different types of marketing apprenticeships to photography and content creation roles. The application process was wide and stressful; I wasn’t entirely sure what I wanted to do, I just knew it had to align with my interests. That’s when I came across my Level 3 Digital Marketing Apprenticeship - and everything spiralled from there.
Why Apprenticeships made sense for me
The idea of learning debt-free while earning a competitive salary was incredibly appealing. I could focus my learning on subjects I was genuinely interested in, work alongside experienced professionals, and get my foot in the door at big companies. It wasn’t just about avoiding future student debt - it was about building a career I could be proud of.
At 17, I started my Level 3 Digital Marketing Apprenticeship at Nissan. I was stepping into a fast-paced corporate environment with little experience and a lot to learn. It was a big adjustment, and at times I felt out of my depth - like a small fish in a big pond. But I stayed open-minded, asked questions, and focused on learning as much as I could. That mindset helped me find my footing and gradually build confidence in my role.
My journey so far
Since starting my apprenticeship, I’ve had the opportunity to work across departments, contribute to exciting projects, and build a wide network of mentors and peers.
My journey began in the Press team at Nissan, where I worked as a Level 3 Digital Marketing Apprentice. It was a fantastic introduction to the automotive industry, allowing me to develop creative skills, understand brand communications, and get involved in real-world press campaigns.
After completing my apprenticeship, I transitioned into my first graduate role as a Data Analyst in the Fleet & Used Cars team. This was a big shift from marketing, but it gave me the chance to broaden my skill set, dive into data-driven decision-making, and understand the more commercial side of the business. Alongside this role, I’m now also completing a Level 4 Data Analyst apprenticeship, which is helping me deepen my technical knowledge and apply it directly to my work.
Along the way, I’ve been fortunate to receive recognition for my efforts. I was named the East of England Advanced Apprentice of the Year, and also received a Highly Commended award at the national level. These awards marked a hugely proud moment in my career, and I’m incredibly thankful for my apprenticeship and for the people who’ve been part of that journey.
Next, I’ll be starting my second graduate rotation in Network Development - another exciting opportunity to explore a new area of the business and continue building on everything I’ve learned so far.
I also proudly serve as the Hertfordshire Apprentice Lead for the Apprentice Ambassador Network (AAN), a brilliant initiative that connects current and former apprentices with those considering the apprenticeship route. It’s a great resource for outreach, support, and networking—and I’d highly recommend getting involved if you’re already on your apprenticeship journey and want to spread the positivity of this alternative career path!
Advice for anyone starting an Apprenticeship
If you’re still in school, college, university, or unemployed - and unsure about your next step, here’s what I’ve learned:
1. Work hard - it doesn’t go unnoticed
Effort and attitude go a long way. People notice when you show up, take initiative, and give everything your best!
2. Be inquisitive - ask questions
You’re in this environment to learn. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, seek feedback, and explore different areas of the business.
3. Network whenever you can
Every meeting, event, or coffee chat is a chance to build relationships. Networking isn’t just about climbing the ladder - it’s about learning from others, finding mentors, and opening doors to new opportunities.
4. Don’t be afraid to ask for help
You’re not expected to know everything. Whether it’s a technical question or a personal challenge, asking for help is a strength, not a weakness.
5. Enjoy the ride
Apprenticeships are intense, rewarding, and full of growth. Take it all in. Celebrate your wins, learn from your mistakes, and appreciate the journey.
Finding the path that works for you
Success isn’t about ticking boxes or following someone else’s blueprint. It’s about finding the career path that works for you. For me, that was an apprenticeship. It gave me the chance to learn, earn, and grow in a way that felt right for me.
If you’re considering this route, take the time to research. Look into different apprenticeship sites, explore industries that interest you, and don’t be afraid to reach out to people who’ve been through them. There’s something out there for everyone!
