The Next Big Decision

Inspiration By Mohammed Ally Published on November 4

Growing up, I was surrounded by people who seemed to know exactly what they wanted to do in life. They had a clear vision of their future, while I was still trying to figure out mine. Some knew from a young age that they wanted to go into medicine, law or engineering, I, on the other hand, didn’t have that same certainty.

There were so many options, yet I didn’t fully understand them, which left me unsure about the path I wanted to take.

A Path Different From The Rest

Eventually, I reached a moment that would shape my future: what course should I study at university? Almost all of my sixth form peers were submitting UCAS applications, writing personal statements and comparing university choices. It was exciting for them, but I couldn’t share that same enthusiasm. The traditional university route didn’t feel right. The idea of graduating with debt, limited experience and a fanaticised “university lifestyle”, made me hesitate.

That’s when I came across apprenticeships. I knew they offered the chance to gain hands-on experience while studying, but I wasn’t educated on how many different levels and opportunities were available.

Even though I had been accepted into university, it was only ever my Plan B. So, while almost all my sixth form peers were preparing for university life, I decided to take a different path. Researching and applying for apprenticeships and eventually reaching the interview stage for a Level 3 Business Administration Apprenticeship with Virgin Media O2. After preparing thoroughly, practising interview questions, and watching videos on key tips, I was excited to receive an offer. Only then did I realise the qualification was equivalent to two A Levels, not a degree. After reflecting and discussing it with my family and friends, I decided to take a leap and accept the offer.

It was a decision that would help me determine whether an apprenticeship suited my learning style better than traditional education.

Finding My Passion

A year and a half later, I completed my apprenticeship with a distinction. This success lead me onto my next big decision: should I stay in my full-time role that I had been offered or pursue a degree apprenticeship?

As a degree apprenticeship had always been my goal, I used some time in my full time role to explore different projects and find out what truly motivated me. That was when I discovered my passion for project management. The more I learned, the more I realised how well it matched my personality. I have always enjoyed organising, planning, collaborating and solving problems. I was already demonstrating many qualities of a project manager.

I started looking for a company that shared my values and that offered a variety of future opportunities. That search led me to Amazon, one of the most competitive apprenticeship employers in the UK.

My Journey at Amazon

Rather than letting that discourage me, I used it as motivation, because for once I had a clear vision on what I wanted. I improved my CV, aligning my skills to project management, researched interview tips and discovered Amazon’s 16 Leadership Principles, which guide decision making across the company.

With all this effort, I ensured that I secured a place as a Project Manager Degree Apprentice, partnered with the University of Exeter, a Russell Group university.

One year on, I have grown more than I could have imagined, both personally and professionally. Amazon’s community has helped me become more confident in decision making and public speaking and leadership. I am also part of an amazing team making a real impact. I have supported young people who are exploring their next steps, through managing work experience weeks, T-levels and I have contributed to the creation of apprentices across the UK.

Looking Ahead

Right now, I’m in a steady place, but I know that learning never stops, whether it is academically or professionally. It won’t be long before it’s time for my next big decision. Until then, I’ll continue building my network, developing my skills and learning from those around me.

Through this experience, I have learned that there is no single “right” path. For some, university will be the perfect choice, but for others, taking a different route can open doors they never knew existed. The most important is finding the path that feels right for you.

My Advice

1. Don’t Compare Yourself To Others

Everyone’s journey moves at its own pace. Some people may secure an apprenticeship on their first application, while others might apply several times before being accepted. Don’t let this discourage you. Use it as motivation to improve your skills, strengthen your applications and keep going. Progress looks different for everyone, and perseverance is what will set you apart.

2. It Is Never Too Late

Whether you’re leaving school or changing your career, remember this: it’s never too late to take a leap. Apprenticeships are for all ages and offer real experience, valuable qualifications and the chance to grow in ways you might never expect

3. Research

§ The more you know, the better prepared you will be. Take time to explore different industries, apprenticeship standards and employers to find what truly fits you. Use platforms like LinkedIn to connect with people in roles that interest you and ask them about their experiences and company culture. This will ensure you choose a path that truly aligns with your interests, values and goals.

4. Build Your Network And Reach Out To People

Your network is your net worth. A phrase which I never truly understood before working in a professional environment. Building connections will open so many doors for you and provide you with guidance to your journey. Surround yourself with people who inspire, challenge and support you, and never be afraid to reach out.

The path you choose doesn’t have to be the same as everyone else’s, and that’s what makes it special. Every opportunity, challenge and new experience helps shape who you become. Apply for an apprenticeship and make your next big decision today.
