The Squiggly Line to Success: Why being Directionless at 17 was my greatest asset

Into Sales, Marketing and Procurement Apprenticeships By Mehreen Islam Published on May 6

At seventeen, my life felt like it was being lived according to a template I hadn't designed. I was in sixth form, I was studying for my A-Levels, and I was going through the motions of the UCAS application cycle. I remember sitting down to write my personal statement, staring at the screen, and feeling a profound sense of disconnect.

It wasn't that I lacked ambition or that I didn’t want to write about my goals; it was that my heart wasn’t fully in the destination. I knew, deep down, that my learning style wasn't adaptive to a fully academic environment. I was a "doer," not just a "reader." I wanted to be in the thick of it, learning through experience rather than just through textbooks and lectures. The problem was, I didn't quite know how to word that at the time. In an environment geared entirely toward university pathways, admitting you don't want to go to university can feel like admitting you don't want to succeed.

The Missing Map: Going Solo

The biggest challenge I faced wasn’t the work, it was the silence. In my school, apprenticeships simply weren't part of the conversation. They weren't discussed in assemblies, there were no guest speakers from different industries, and there certainly weren't any posters on the walls explaining how they worked. It was as if the only two options for a successful life were "University" or "Total Mystery."

Because apprenticeships weren't talked about, I had to become my own careers advisor. I researched my options almost entirely on my own, without much support from any area of my life at the time. It was a lonely process. While my friends were comparing university campuses and checking out student societies, I was digging through portals and corporate websites, trying to figure out how to break into industries that felt like they were behind locked doors.

This was my first real test of resilience. It takes a lot of mental energy to push against the grain when you’re seventeen. You start to wonder if everyone else knows something you don’t. But I trusted my gut. I knew that three more years of purely academic study would stifle me, and I was determined to find a way to learn while working.

The Christie’s Breakthrough

Everything changed the day I got my acceptance at Christie’s Auction House. If you aren’t familiar with Christie’s, it is one of the world's most prestigious institutions. Getting that offer was an incredible moment. It was the validation I needed; proof that my "non-traditional" path was actually a gateway to somewhere elite.

I remember Results Day in August 2023 vividly. For most people, it’s a day of high-stakes terror, where your entire future feels like it’s teetering on a grade boundary. But for me, the pressure was off. I had already made up my mind on what the next few years of my life would look like, and I knew I was right. I wasn't waiting for a university to pick me; I had already picked my career.

I spent my time at Christie’s absorbing everything. I learned how a global business operates from the inside out. I saw how deals were made, how clients were managed, and how professional reputations were built. By the time I completed my apprenticeship with a Merit in December 2024, I felt years ahead of where I would have been if I had spent that time in a lecture hall.

The Pivot: Breaking My Own Rules

Once my time at Christie’s wrapped up, I was ready for the "next step." I actually told myself that I wouldn’t do another apprenticeship. I felt like I had "graduated" from that model and it was time to move on and find a permanent position. I was stress-applying for roles, feeling the weight of the "what now?" question that hits everyone after a big milestone.

But fate has a way of surprising you. While I was searching, I saw an opening for a Client Management apprenticeship at Jellyfish. Even though I’d told myself "no more apprenticeships," the role was perfect. Jellyfish is a global digital partner to some of the biggest brands on the planet. The opportunity was too good to ignore based on a self-imposed rule.

I was invited to an assessment day, and I decided to go for it, not thinking much would come out of it. The day was intense - high-energy and high-stakes - and as I went through the tasks and met my potential training provider, I could feel my mind starting to change. I had walked in thinking this was just another application, but I walked out realizing that maybe this role was what I needed to grow and progress.

Global Brands and No Regrets

Before I knew it, I was being told I’d been offered the position. By that point, my heart was fully in it. I realized that my learning style - that applied learning I had craved back in sixth form - was exactly what Jellyfish valued. I stopped worrying about the "apprenticeship" title and started looking at the opportunity.

I am now over a year into my journey at Jellyfish, and it has been the most amazing experience of my life. I’ve had the chance to meet industry leaders and work on global brands that everyone recognizes - names like UGG and Sony. I’ve even had the opportunity to attend Advertising Week Europe, a massive industry event that brings together the brightest minds in marketing.

The most rewarding part hasn’t just been the brands on my CV; it’s been the realization that I was right all along. I didn't need to fit into the academic mold to find success. By trusting my intuition at 17, I bypassed the "default" route and landed exactly where I belonged.

Looking Back: What I’ve Learned

If you’re currently in the position I was, feeling like the academic route is a suit that doesn’t fit, the best thing you can do is learn not to fear the solo research. If your school or your social circle isn’t talking about the path you want, it doesn't mean that path doesn't exist; it just means you have to be your own advocate. The time you spend digging through portals now is the best investment you’ll ever make.

Along the way, I also realized that the qualification is only half the story. While the Merit I earned at Christie’s was a great milestone, the real-world experience and the confidence I gained while working were far more valuable. It’s also important to be open to pivoting. I was adamant that I wouldn't do a second apprenticeship, but if I had stuck to that rigid rule, I would have missed out on the incredible culture at Jellyfish. Don’t let your ego or a pre-set plan get in the way of a great opportunity.

Finally, once you do land that first role, remember to own it. You are there to learn, of course, but you are also there to contribute. Don't be afraid to speak up, ask the "obvious" questions, and lean into the applied learning style that got you there in the first place. I have no regrets. The journey from a frustrated student to working on global campaigns has been a squiggle, not a straight line - and that’s exactly why it’s been so worth it.
