Too Good to Be True? My Journey to Securing 4 Degree Apprenticeship Offers

Inspiration By Favour Iwegbu Published on August 26

When I first heard about degree apprenticeships, I genuinely thought it was a scam.

It was during the COVID lockdown, somewhere between endless online classes and hours of screen time, that I stumbled across the concept. Get paid to study for a degree, gain real-world experience, and graduate debt-free? It seemed too good to be true - so why wasn’t everyone talking about it?

Looking back, that question was the turning point.

By Year 10/11, I was already deep into research mode. I spent my free time reading up on different apprenticeship programmes and company schemes. I learned that if I wanted to get in, I had to do more than just be interested - I had to stand out.

Building Blocks of My Apprenticeship Journey

My first real taste of industry came in Year 10 when I landed a work experience placement at NCC Group, a cybersecurity firm. That experience exposed me to the fast-paced world of tech and gave me the motivation to pursue more opportunities.

In the summer of Year 12, I took things a step further by securing a tech internship at JP Morgan. These opportunities didn’t fall into my lap - I found them through platforms like Uptree and the Social Mobility Foundation, which offer incredible support to students from underrepresented backgrounds. Along the way, I also attended career workshops, CV-building sessions, and assessment centre prep events, all of which sharpened my skills for the competitive application process ahead.

One of the most impactful things I did during sixth form was getting a career mentor. Having someone in my corner to talk through my plans, review my applications, and push me to keep going made all the difference.

The Application Marathon

I’ll be honest - the application process was intense.

In total, I applied for almost 40 degree apprenticeships. Out of those, I seriously pursued around 25, progressed past initial stages for about 19, made it to the final steps for 7 - and received offers from 4.

It was also a real test of resilience. I remember one particular week when I received a string of rejection emails - all while I was supposed to be focused on preparing for my A-levels. It was tough. After putting in so much effort, it felt disheartening, but a good friend told me “Rejection is redirection”. You’ve got to keep your morale up and stay grounded in your goal. This stage can be overwhelming, but persistence is key.

The process was draining, especially alongside A-levels. If I could go back, I’d focus on quality over quantity. My advice? Apply for a few you’re not 100% set on early, just for practice - especially when it comes to interviews and assessment centres. But don’t overdo it. Burnout is real, and balance is key.

Interview Tips That Worked for Me

One game-changer during interviews was the power of storytelling.

When asked about strengths, challenges, or leadership, I didn’t just list buzzwords. I told real stories - times I solved problems, worked in a team, or made an impact. Your interviewer wants to hear about you, not just phrases you found on Google. Be authentic, and don’t be afraid to show your personality.

Looking Back – And Ahead

Now, two years into my degree apprenticeship, I can confidently say I made the right choice. The practical learning, the exposure to industry, and the chance to build my network while getting my degree? It’s something a traditional university just couldn’t offer me.

If you’re thinking about applying for a degree apprenticeship - start early, use every resource you can find, and stay consistent. The journey isn’t always easy, but it’s more than worth it.

And if it seems too good to be true? That might just mean it’s exactly the opportunity you’ve been looking for.
