Our Apprenticeship Academy
Whether you’re making your first transition into employment or changing careers and would like the opportunity to gain further qualifications without following the traditional educational route, an apprenticeship with us could be just the ticket to help you achieve your career goals and aspirations.
We firmly believe that everybody deserves opportunities to access apprenticeships and our aim is moving towards a diverse organisation at all levels. We want to be fully representative of our diverse communities across Wales.
What would my responsibilities be?
You will gain a variety of experience, whilst studying towards qualifications which will develop your knowledge, skills and behaviours, enable you to support the wider team and allow you to become occupationally competent within the Traction and Rolling Stock industry.
You will be enrolled with both Coleg Menai and Coleg Y Cymoedd during your apprenticeship. You will be on a day release basis for the first two years of the apprenticeship (with Coleg Menai) where you will work towards your City and Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Engineering.
During your third and fourth year, you will work towards obtaining your HNC in engineering. There will also be opportunity to study towards your NVQ.
Although your home depot will be Holyhead, you will be required to travel to other TfW depots on a quarterly basis over the 4-year programme. This will allow you to partake in the required training, be assessed on your core competencies and gain an array of experience. You will be required to visit our depots in Machynlleth, Canton and Taffs Well.
If your application is successful, you will be invited to an assessment centre at either our head office in Pontypridd, or at our sites in Canton/Taffs Well.
Are there any essential requirements?
- GCSE Grades A-C/4 to 9 in English Language and Science, GCSE Grade A-B/6 to 9 in Mathematics.
- Passion for Engineering.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Software.
Is it right for me?
To help you decide, have a think if these apply to you.
Due to the travel requirements of this role, you must be at least 17 to apply and must have turned 18 by September 2026.
You must not have already achieved a similar or higher-level qualification in the apprenticeship role you have applied for. For example, if you have a degree in Engineering, you will not be eligible to apply for an Engineering apprenticeship. However, you could apply for another apprenticeship in a different profession, such as Finance.
Welsh language skills
We welcome people who can speak or write in Welsh, but it’s not essential for this role.

Assessment day
Once you’ve submitted your application, we’ll invite you to a friendly and relaxed assessment day, followed by a final interview.
Equal opportunities
Not sure if you meet every requirement? Research shows that some people including women and those from minority groups, may hesitate to apply unless they feel 100% qualified.
