Derby City Council are offering an exciting new apprenticeship combining study alongside day-to-day working within the Public Health team as a Public Health Practitioner Apprentice (Level 6). The apprenticeship will lead to a degree qualification (Public Health BSc) as well as providing an opportunity for the candidate to pursue a career in Public Health.
During the apprenticeship, the candidate will work in Climate and Active Environments service and Public Health team. In their time here they will gain working experience of a range of Public Health functions, such as prevention of ill health, health surveillance and health protection whilst working directly within-

Parks and Open Spaces
Physical Activity and Health
Climate and Energy

The candidate will support the planning, delivery, monitoring, evaluation, communication and engagement approaches to public health services, projects and programmes. Good communication, understanding data and the ability to engage with communities will be important skills to help achieve this. Across the three years in the Public Health team, the candidate will be supported to meet the learning objectives required for the apprenticeship.

In addition, the successful candidate is responsible for undertaking and completing a BSc Public Health at Coventry University. At least one working day each week will be spent studying / attending university courses.

The successful candidate does not have to have existing experience of working in public health, or in local authorities. However, they should be able to demonstrate how their existing knowledge and experience can be applied to the role.

The Opportunity
In the role of Level 6 Public Health Apprentice, here’s an example of what you’ll be doing to make an impact:
The apprentice will be working towards achieving a Public Health Practitioner Degree Apprenticeship where they will not only gain an understanding of Public Health theory but also real hands on experience to put this into practice.

Throughout the 3 year apprenticeship they will spend time with a number of different teams including, smoking cessation, weight management, climate and outdoor spaces. This exposure will enable the apprentice to have a direct impact on public health activity. They will also spend time with the Public Health team which will include Public Health mentor, where they will gain experience in commissioning as well as supporting and influencing public health policy.

Combining the practical and theory elements will ensure the apprentice plays a significant role in improving the health and wellbeing of Derby City residents.

To be successful in this role, you’ll ideally have…
Passionate about improving the health and wellbeing of Derby City residents and reducing health inequalities

A commitment to supporting communities

A basic understanding of Public Health / NHS / local authorities and their responsibilities

Have the ability to think analytically with good problem solving skills

Have GCSE Maths and English (4 or above or functional skills) and Successful study at level 3 (A – Level, BTEC qualifications) or at least 2 years of working within a public health relate role

Ability to self-motivate, work independently and prioritise own workload
