About the role
We have an exciting opportunity to join Northumbrian Water’s Analytical Laboratory team as an Apprentice Analyst. This is a key role focusing on analysing water according to Drinking Water Inspectorate and Environment Agency regulations, to maintain our industry leading standards.
If you have an enthusiasm for science and using a variety of analytical techniques to confirm the water in our region is the quality we expect, then this opportunity will hit the mark.
During the course of the apprenticeship you will complete the Laboratory Scientist (Chemical Science) Degree Apprenticeship where you will obtain a BSc (Hons) Chemical Science degree as well as a Level 6 degree apprenticeship (Laboratory Scientist (Chemical Science) Degree Apprenticeship ¦ Manchester Metropolitan University (mmu.ac.uk)
You will be trained in a variety of analytical chemistry techniques, from traditional wet chemistry to more modern techniques like LCMS and ICP, following our regulated methods and procedures. You will maintain laboratory equipment and develop troubleshooting skills, so you learn what to do when things don’t go according to plan.
You will be working with hazardous chemicals, so you will be trained in our safety systems, follow safe working practices, and wear Personal Protective Equipment.
About you
You will be over 18 and have 104 UCAS points (equivalent of grades BCC) – with one being in Chemistry, ideally have Maths and English at grade C/4 or above and must be willing to travel to Manchester for up to 1 week stays during the apprenticeship for course delivery.
You will have excellent communication skills both written and verbal, be able to work in a team and be able to meet challenging deadlines. You will have good attention to detail and the ability to follow detailed instructions. You will have a practical approach to be able to support hands on with testing and using equipment.
To help you be successful in the role you will need to have great IT skills including fully conversant in the use of Microsoft Office packages. We are looking for you to be creative and to highlight potential improvements to ways of working.
