Join our dynamic and forward-thinking team at HMS as an Apprentice Quantity Surveyor, where you will gain practical experience and develop valuable skills, working towards an NVQ Level 4 qualification. This is a 36-month apprenticeship. Successful candidates will be expected to travel to their assigned college or workplace as required.

What Will You Be Doing?

Support contract administration including programme tracking, notices, surveys, measurements, claims, and financial reporting.

Prepare accurate interim valuations, final accounts, and cost value reports.
-
Work with contractors to meet cost, quality, safety, and environmental standards.

Manage subcontractor and material packages, ensuring records, valuations, and timely payments.

Ensure invoice and valuation accuracy, reducing rejections.

Understand budgets and financial goals, supporting strong commercial outcomes.

Authorise and generate variations for in-house and subcontracted work.

Maintain accurate records and update IT systems.
-
Support tendering, estimating, site surveys, and new business opportunities.

Assist with month-end/year-end reporting, forecasts, and budgets.

Monitor project profit/loss and address underperformance.

Help improve financial performance across workstreams.

Track and report on KPIs like profit, turnover per operative, and performance metrics.

Take ownership of your development and support the team where needed.

Actively engage in learning and development opportunities.

Attend college and complete all academic and work-based assessments.

Regularly review progress with your workplace mentor.

Support other team duties as required.

What We’re Looking For:

Applicants must have a minimum of five GCSEs at Grade 4/C or above, including Maths and English or a Level 2 Apprenticeship. Alternatively, a vocational qualification at Level 1 plus GCSEs at Grade D/3 or above in both Maths and English will be accepted. Functional Skills Level 1 in English and Maths is also accepted as an alternative to GCSEs. Please note: For apprentices aged 19 and over at the start of their apprenticeship, English and Maths qualifications are no longer a mandatory requirement in England. However, a basic assessment will still be required to ensure suitability for the course.

Assessment Day
Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend an assessment day to further evaluate their skills and suitability for the apprenticeship. Assessment days will take place during the week commencing 9th July 2025.
College or Training Organisation
All our apprentices are enrolled in a local college in Liverpool, Warrington, or St Helens. Due to capacity limits, placements may be assigned to any of these colleges.
Your Training Plan
You will receive both on-the-job and off-the-job training over the course of 36 months, following a detailed induction and training plan. You will attend college on a day-release basis. Upon successful completion, you will earn the Construction Quantity Surveying Technician — Level 4 Apprenticeship Standard Qualification.
During Your Apprenticeship
You will work across our three main vibrant heartlands – Liverpool, Warrington, and St Helens and surrounding areas, where you’ll rotate through a variety of dynamic workstreams, gaining hands-on experience and building a broad foundation of knowledge along the way.
