Willows Bird of Prey Centre and Wildlife Trail is offering an exciting apprenticeship for a dedicated individual to gain practical, hands-on experience in the care of birds of prey and farm animals within a professional and supportive setting.
This apprenticeship is ideal for someone looking to begin a career in animal care, wildlife management, or falconry. You will receive full training in the specialist handling and care of birds of prey, while also gaining valuable skills in farm animal management.
Key Responsibilities
As an apprentice, your training and duties will include:
Birds of Prey Care
- Assisting with the daily cleaning and maintenance of aviaries and equipment
- Preparing and portioning raw food to meet specific dietary needs
- Supporting bird handling and flying sessions under the guidance of experienced falconers
Farm & Animal Care
- Cleaning and maintaining enclosures for farm animals
- Feeding and watering animals to ensure their health and wellbeing
- Helping with general farm maintenance, including fencing and equipment upkeep
Visitor Interaction
- Learning to engage with visitors during educational talks and demonstrations
- Supporting the team with public handling events and farm tours

Desired Skills and Qualities
- A genuine interest in birds of prey and animal care

- Previous animal experience is preferred but not required – full training will be provided
Desired Qualifications
- GCSE or equivalent, Grade C/4 or above in maths and English preferred but not essential
- Applicants should not already hold a Level 2 or higher in Animal Care or similar
Future prospects
- Potential progression into a permanent role for the right candidate
Training
- Full training to be provided by the employer and KEITS at the place of employment. The applicant will be working towards a Level 2 Animal Care apprenticeship.
- The learner will be allocated an industry specific training consultant who will provide both remote and on site visits throughout the apprenticeship.
- The apprentice will work towards an End Point Assessment (EPA) at the end of their apprenticeship.
