Job Description:
A GSE (Ground Support Equipment) Apprentice Mechanic position involves learning to service and maintain various vehicles and equipment used at airports, including those powered by electric, electric/hybrid, and diesel engines. This apprenticeship combines on-the-job training with formal education to develop the skills needed for a career in this field.
Key aspects of a GSE Apprentice Mechanic role:
Hands-on experience:
Apprentices work alongside experienced technicians to gain practical knowledge in servicing, maintaining, and repairing GSE.
Technical training:
Apprenticeships include time dedicated to formal training, such as a Heavy vehicle service and maintenance technician (level 3) course, to gain professional knowledge and skills.
Diverse equipment:
Apprentices will work on a wide variety of equipment, including cars, HGVs, and airport vehicles, up to 80-tonne aircraft tractors.
Safety and compliance:
Apprentices learn to operate all tools and equipment safely and adhere to relevant safety and operational standards.
Troubleshooting and repair:
Apprentices will be involved in diagnosing and repairing faults in mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems, potentially working from schematics and technical manuals.
Airport environment:
The work is often fast-paced and requires adaptability to the unique environment of an airport, including potential breakdowns and unscheduled repairs.
Typical responsibilities include:
