Role Summary
Our Scenic Maker Apprenticeship offers a hands-on training opportunity for those wishing to take their first steps towards a career in making Scenic elements in the performing arts industry. This apprenticeship is ideal for someone with a strong interest in scenic construction and understanding how this fit into the producing theatre process.
A Scenic Maker is responsible for creating all aspects of stage scenery. usually this will be using timber but can also be other materials. They will realise the designer's vision by working from the construction drawings provided to build various pieces of set and props.
This is a full-time, vocational training programme following the Scenic Construction Technician apprenticeship qualification (Level 3).
Responsibilities
A Scenic Maker is responsible for creating all aspects of stage scenery. Usually this will be using timber but can also be other materials. They will realise the designer’s vision by working from the construction drawings provided to build various pieces of set and props. You will also be working on the full variety of performing arts performances at the Rep including musicals, drama, opera and dance. The role involves evening and weekend working.
Person Specification
Our ideal candidate is someone who’s curious, eager to learn, and ready to take on new challenges—whether that’s working at height, staying late for a show, or helping create new scenic elements. You’ll need to be comfortable managing your time well, working independently when needed, and always keeping safety in mind for yourself and those around you.
A friendly, positive attitude and great communication skills will go a long way in helping you build strong working relationships and really make the most of this opportunity.
It’s a bonus if you’ve had some experience in theatre already—maybe through school, college, or a local group—including woodworking or carpentry. Most importantly, we’re looking for someone who’s 18 or over, enthusiastic, and ready to roll up their sleeves and be part of a hard-working, creative team. Terms and Conditions
Period of Work: This is a fixed term 24-month apprentice contract, subject to successful completion of a probationary period of 3 months.
Pay: £18,200 per annum (i.e. £10 per hour based on a 35-hour week). This meets the National Minimum Wage for apprentices in the UK, and will increase to National Living Wage after 12 months in post if you are over 21 years old.
Hours: 35 hours per week. Some evening and weekend work will be required. We don't encourage or expect overtime, however in the event that over time is worked, this may be taken as time off in lieu to be agreed in advance with your line manager.
Holidays: 25 days per year plus bank holidays. The holiday year runs from 1 September to 31 August each year.
Location of Work: Your main place of work will be The Rep in Birmingham, but you may be required to work permanently or temporarily at other locations locally. You may be asked to work temporarily in other locations in the UK.
