Job Summary
We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Apprentice Bicycle Mechanic to join our dynamic team. This role is ideal for individuals looking to gain hands-on experience in the cycle industry while working under the guidance of experienced qualified mechanics. As an Apprentice Bike Mechanic, you will assist in the maintenance and repair of a range of bikes and e-bikes, learning essential skills and techniques that will pave the way for your future career.
Responsibilities
- Assist qualified mechanics in diagnosing and repairing issues on mountain bikes, road bikes and electric bikes
- Perform routine maintenance tasks on our fleet of hire bikes
- Help maintain a clean and organised workshop environment
- Learn to use various tools and equipment safely and effectively
- Document work performed and maintain accurate records of repairs
- Participate in training sessions to enhance technical skills and knowledge
Requirements
- A genuine interest in bikes and the cycle industry
- Strong attention to detail and a willingness to learn
- Good problem-solving skills and the ability to work as part of a team
- Basic understanding of bike maintenance is advantageous but not essential
- Ability to follow instructions accurately and work under supervision
About The Apprenticeship:
The Apprenticeship in Bicycle Mechanics is a work-based training programme for bike mechanics designed around the needs of the cycle trade that leads to the occupational standard.
Your training will be delivered in partnership with Activate Cycle Academy and Cyclewise. Once you have completed the apprenticeship you will achieve your Cytech level 2 and Cytech level 3 qualification (industry recognised qualifications).
During the programme you will have an Active Cycle Academy Mentor who will visit you on site at Cyclewise every 6 weeks. There will be both online work and onsite practical work. There will also be a classroom block of sessions at one of Active Cycle Academy Sites, this will be 10 days for the Cytech level 2 and a further 6 days for the Cytech level 3.

Cyclewise is an independent rider-owner business with two busy cycle stores in Cumbria. Cyclewise Whinlatter is our trail centre & bike hire store specialising in mountain bikes and electric MTBs. Cyclewise Cockermouth is our esteemed road, electric, adventure and leisure bike store. In addition to cycle retail and mountain bike hire, we provide expert workshop services, a range of MTB skills coaching, British Cycling MTB leadership courses, Bikeability training in schools, technical expertise and consultancy, and an e-commerce operation. The industry is exciting and challenging with customers increasingly accessing our products and services across all channels.
About The Role:
The right applicant will join our growing team and work at either our Whinlatter or Cockermouth store. Both premises have a fully fitted Park Tools workshop and accredited Shimano Service Centre. This is a new exciting role in the Cyclewise business, which delivers a diverse range of cycle related services.
