As a Modern Apprentice, you will be part of a team dedicated to providing a safe, stimulating, and nurturing environment for children. This role involves learning and developing skills in early learning and childcare or playwork, while working towards a relevant Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ) You will be mentored by experienced staff and will be responsible for a range of duties that support the daily operations of the setting and the well-being and development of the children in your care.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Child Development and Play:
- Assist in planning, organising, and leading a variety of play and learning activities (e.g., arts and crafts, music, reading, outdoor games) appropriate for the children's age and stage of development.
- Observe and reflect on children's play behaviours to support their learning and social-emotional development.
- Encourage child-led play and help create an environment where children feel free to explore their own ideas and interests.
- Support children with their literacy and numeracy skills in a fun and engaging way.
- Safety and Well-being:
- Maintain a safe, clean, and secure environment for all children.
- Adhere to all health and safety policies and procedures, including those for emergency incidents, common illnesses, and first aid.
- Assist with personal care for children as required (e.g., feeding, changing nappies).
- Supervise children during all activities, including indoor and outdoor play and off-site trips.
- Be aware of and sensitive to the individual needs of children, including those with additional support needs, and take appropriate action if a child is at risk.
- Communication and Teamwork:
- Communicate sensitively and effectively with children, using active listening techniques.
- Establish and maintain positive relationships with parents and carers, providing updates on their child's progress.
- Work as a collaborative member of the team, supporting colleagues and contributing to a positive work environment.
- Liaise with other professionals and agencies (e.g., social workers, health visitors) as required.
- Administrative and Professional Responsibilities:
- Contribute to daily record-keeping, including attendance, incident reports, and observations of children's progress.
- Participate in staff meetings and training opportunities.
- Undertake reflective practice to create and work towards a personal development plan.
- Adhere to all policies and procedures of the setting and the relevant professional standards set by the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC).

Qualifications and Requirements
- There are no formal qualifications required to start a Modern Apprenticeship, though some employers may ask for qualifications at SCQF levels 4 to 6.
- You must be able to meet the entry requirements for the relevant SVQ in Social Services (Children and Young People).
- Successful candidates will be required to undergo a Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) check.
