Overview
As a Level 2 Apprentice Welder, you will work under the guidance of experienced professionals to learn and perform welding tasks using various techniques and equipment. You will be trained to produce high-quality welds, understand technical specifications, and ensure safety standards are met. This role is designed to help develop the necessary skills and knowledge to become a fully qualified welder.
The apprentice will undertake a Level 2 Apprenticeship Standard programme ‘Welder’. This will include a full-time period of practical workshop based ‘off-the-job’ training at SETA’s Apprenticeship Centre in Southampton.
You will also undertake a knowledge training where you will be required to attend SETA one day a week within the first year. After your initial training at SETA, you will be with your employer working on developing your skills in relation to your job role in conjunction with a SETA assigned Assessor.
Responsibilities
- Apply health and safety procedures, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Prepare welding materials and work areas, ensuring proper sourcing and protection.
- Set up, modify, and monitor welding equipment and controls.
- Perform welding tasks using processes such as TIG, MIG/MAG, MMA, and FCAW.
- Adapt welding techniques to different materials and joint configurations.
- Conduct visual inspections and alignment checks to ensure quality.
- Maintain and restore the work area after completing welding activities.
- Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors.
- Follow environmental and sustainability regulations, segregating resources for reuse and recycling.

Qualifications
- GCSEs or equivalent qualifications in relevant subjects (e.g., Mathematics, Science, or Engineering). Minimum grade 4 required to apply for this apprenticeship.
- Willingness to complete Level 2 Welding Apprenticeship training.
Working Week
Monday to Friday - 37.5 hours per week with 4 days on site (there will also be occasions of working onsite required, including travel and overnight stays on location). You will also undertake a knowledge training where you will be required to attend SETA one day a week within the first year. After your initial training at SETA, you will be with your employer working on developing your skills in relation to your job role in conjunction with a SETA assigned Assessor.
Things to Consider
- This is an 18-21 month apprenticeship and applicants MUST BE free from full time education to be eligible to apply for it and have the minimum qualification level to apply for it
- Applicants MUST BE resident in the UK for a minimum of 3 years prior to the start of learning and have work authorisation for the UK.
- Applicants WILL NOT BE eligible to apply if they have already achieved a qualification which is equal to or higher thank the apprenticeship standard on offer.
- Applicants MUST BE resident in the area local to the apprenticeship opportunity or be prepared to relocate in time to start employment and study.
- Applicants MUST BE committed to the learning and stay to the end of the apprenticeship.
- This position will be on site for 4 days at Task Welding in Portsmouth and 1 day attending SETA’s Apprenticeship Centre in Southampton.
- Applicants MUST BE committed to also working on site else where when required, this will include travel and overnight stays on location.
- Ability to travel to both locations will be essential.
- To be eligible for an apprenticeship you must have Math and English GCSE minimum grade 4, have been resident in the UK for a minimum of 3 years and be free from full time education.
- There is prospect of a full-time position at the end of it.
- The start date for this role will be from September 2025 onwards.
