This opportunity will enable you to gain valuable mechanical and electrical engineering experience while working alongside a team of highly skilled professionals committed to excellence.
Work:
- 38 hour working week
- Monday - Friday - 8am start (30 minute lunch) 4:06 finish
- 1st Year Basic Salary starts at: £17,467.84
- 2nd Year Basic Salary starts at: £24,897.60
- 3rd Year Basic Salary starts at: £26,201.76
As an apprentice, you will be gaining real hands-on experience in one of Metroline Manchester's 4 bus depot workshops:
- Hyde Road: M12 6JS
- Ashton (Tameside): SK15 1QP
- Sharston: M22 4RB
- Wythenshawe: M23 9ET
You will develop your practical and technical skills by working alongside experienced engineers, building a foundation for a successful engineering career in the bus and coach sector.
What You’ll Do at Work:
You will support the maintenance and servicing of Metroline Manchester’s fleet, learning all aspects of mechanical and electrical engineering related to buses and coaches. This includes servicing, diagnostics, fault finding, and repairs – all while progressing towards a nationally recognised Level 3 qualification. Enrolling onto this apprenticeship provides a structured pathway to gain the technical knowledge and practical skills needed to inspect and prepare vehicles to DVSA standards.
Key Responsibilities and Training Areas:
Core Foundational Duties:
- Foundation skills: materials, fabrication, tools, and measuring devices
- Engine operation and servicing fundamentals
- Basic electrical and transmission systems
- Chassis systems (phases I & II)
- Inspection, servicing, and fault diagnostics
- Intermediate electrical skills
Mechelec-Specific Duties:
- Advanced engine design and systems
- Hybrid systems and CANbus technology
- Advanced diagnostics and fault-finding
- Transmission and chassis systems
- SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) maintenance
- EPA (End Point Assessment) preparation

Training:
You will receive a mix of practical training and academic learning. Training is delivered both on-the-job and during six/eight-week training blocks each year at S&B Automotive Academy in Bristol.
Your Training Includes:
- A dedicated workplace mentor and a college-based mentor to support your progress
- Use of a bespoke electronic logbook for progress tracking and communication
- Regular Gateway Assessments leading to the End Point Assessment (EPA)
- Fully funded travel, hotel accommodation, breakfast, and evening meals during block release periods in Bristol
Upon completion, you will achieve:
- Level 3 Bus and Coach Engineering Technician (Mechelec) Apprenticeship Standard
- Functional Skills Level 2 in English & Maths (if not already achieved)
Requirements:
Desired Qualifications:
- GCSE or equivalent in Maths (Grade 4/C or above) – desirable
- GCSE or equivalent in English (Grade 4/C or above) – desirable
Relevant prior experience or qualifications can be considered to tailor your apprenticeship plan.
Essential Skills:
- Strong attention to detail
- Logical problem-solving ability
- Willingness to use initiative and work independently when required
- A keen interest in vehicle mechanics and electrical systems
