Based in East Cowes, Datum Electronics Ltd is a world leading, British manufacturer and supplier of static and rotary torque sensors, torque transducers, torque meters and shaft power measurement solutions since 1989.
Datum Electronics products are versatile enough to work across a variety of sectors including marine and shipping, automotive, aerospace and defense, civil engineering, government green and renewables.
As an apprentice, you’ll work alongside skilled engineers and production specialists to create clear, user-friendly documentation—including user manuals, build guides, work instructions, and technical guides. Your work will help customers and internal teams understand complex products and processes with ease.
This role combines on-the-job learning with professional development in technical writing, editing, and document design. You’ll gain valuable insight into electronics manufacturing, quality control, and industry standards, with full support and training provided.
Main tasks and responsibilities:
- As an apprentice Production Support Engineerin an electronics and manufacturing business, you’ll play a key role in creating clear, accurate documentation such as user manuals, build guides, work instructions and technical guides, helping customers and colleagues understand complex products and processes.
- Working closely with engineers and production teams, you’ll learn to translate technical information into accessible language, develop skills in writing, editing and document design, gaining valuable insight into electronics manufacturing practices, industry standards, and quality control.
Essential Qualities and Skills:
- A willingness to learn and ask questions.
- Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Strong IT skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office or similar software.
- The confidence to work collaboratively across departments within the business.
Apprenticeship Standard:
- Level 3 Engineering and Manufacturing Support Technician.
- Between 42-to-45-month Apprenticeship.
- You will be required to complete off-the-job training. This includes time spent learning new skills, attending courses, or carrying out support tasks that fall outside your usual day-to-day responsibilities.
- Weekly attendance at CECAMM as part of the apprenticeship from September.
Working Week:
- Monday-Thursday 08:30-17:00.
Wage:
£8.50 per hour.
Additional information below:
The current National Minimum Wage (NMW) rate for apprentices is £7.55 per hour. This applies to 16-18-year-old apprentices and those aged over 19 in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other apprentices the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The Minimum Wage for Apprentices applies to time spent on the job plus time spent training. This apprenticeship offers a strong foundation for a career in technical communication, combining practical experience with ongoing professional development. Within Datum Electronics there are opportunities to branch out into Software Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering after successful completion of the apprenticeship.
