Salary £28,130 | Comprehensive benefits package | 2-year fixed term contract
Are you ready to take on an exciting opportunity and begin your journey with us at Harwich Haven Authority? We’re looking for someone who’s ready to join our team at the end of May 2025, gaining invaluable experience in the maritime industry while learning from seasoned professionals.
At Harwich Haven Authority, we are proud to protect, conserve, and improve the Haven for the benefit of future generations. To support this vision, we are looking to recruit a Marine Apprentice to join our talented Marine team on a 2-year fixed-term contract, starting at the end of May 2025.
About the Role
Reporting to the Pilot Launch Manager, you will support our busy marine teams by delivering exceptional service to five diverse ports through personnel transfers and maintaining Harwich Haven Authority’s Aids to Navigation.
This is a varied role where your responsibilities will include:
- Assisting the Coxswain in the safe and efficient operation of the Authority’s conservancy vessels when engaged in tasks such as:
⚓ Laying and retrieving buoyage and moorings.
⚓ Obstruction clearance and maintenance of marine structures.
⚓ Surveying duties, oil spill recovery, and harbour patrols.
⚓ Personnel transfers, light inspections, search and rescue operations, and incident investigations.
- Supporting the Coxswain in the safe and efficient operation of Pilot Launch Vessels.
- Undertaking minor repairs and maintenance tasks.
- Developing the ability to work on conservancy vessels and Pilot Launches as required.
- Gaining valuable insight across the Authority by spending time in different departments to support your overall learning experience.
Work Environment
This is a 24/7, 365-day operation, and you will be required to work shift patterns, including nights, weekends, and bank holidays. You will also be expected to work at sea and in all weather conditions, ensuring the safe and efficient operation of our vessels.
Training and Development
The apprenticeship is provided in partnership with SeaRegs Training and combines practical on-the-job experience with block placements at training centres in Plymouth or London. Suitable travel and accommodation will be provided as needed. You will be required to balance your apprenticeship studies alongside your full-time job, developing both practical and theoretical knowledge to excel in the role.
Throughout your apprenticeship, you will learn from experienced colleagues who will share their knowledge and expertise, providing ongoing support and guidance to help you succeed in your learning journey.
What We’re Looking For
- Minimum Grade 4 GCSE or equivalent in English and Maths (or a willingness to work towards these alongside the apprenticeship).
- A can-do attitude, aligned with the Authority’s values, and a strong desire to learn.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work well as part of a team.
- Willingness to work shift patterns as part of a 24/7 operation and perform duties in all weather conditions.
