About the Team
We are looking to appoint an Apprentice Finance Assistant to join our successful and innovative Operational Finance team where you will play a key role in providing high quality financial advice and support to budget holders in relation to their financial responsibilities. The role also supports the County Council's financial framework processes by providing service financial information to enable the preparation of medium-term financial plans, annual budgets, monthly budget monitoring and year end closedown, adding value to service decision making and business planning processes
About the Role
As our apprentice you can expect a varied and challenging role that enables you to gain new professional skills and qualifications. This role has been designed to give progression from Finance Assistant to Finance Officer upon successful completion of the AAT Level 3 apprenticeship training. Further opportunity will be given to apply for AAT Level 4.
We also have a Finance Department Training Board where applications are invited periodically for the opportunity to study Level 7 qualifications.
Key tasks of this post include:
- Arranging and attending regular meetings with budget holders in line with the annual forecasting timetable
- Processing of journals and budget virements
- Writing financial reports to detail variances against budgets to support decision making
- Performing detailed reconciliation of transactions
- Record keeping and data input
- Review, analysis and reconciliation of system information
- Perform regular accurate calculations to support for varying service requirements
- Check, review and challenge forecasts submitted by budget holders
You’ll be supported from day one to learn and practice these duties, by a skilled and experienced team.
You will have the opportunity to contribute to the provision of high-quality financial advice and support across the Council. You will be supporting services within the Communities Directorate, which includes a range of front-line services including Waste Management; Highways; Planning; Public and School Transport; Road Safety; Parking; Country Parks; Infrastructure and Regeneration; Fleet Management; Engineering Design Services; Forestry; Trading Standards & Community Safety, and Economic Development.
The role will be office/home working based. You will be expected to liaise with colleagues daily and work at Shire Hall on a regular basis. After enough training and building of experience you will be expected to work independently so will need to be confident in lone working, paying particular attention to health & safety practices.

Key Requirements
We’re seeking somebody who is motivated, creative, organised, and willing to take responsibility for the success of their activities. You will need to gain a good working knowledge of Excel and become familiar with our financial systems. As you will be working with and alongside a wide range of colleagues, you will need to have good interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal. A positive attitude and a common sense approach are essential.
A minimum of five GCSE passes at grade 9 – 4 or A* - C including English and Maths
