Leicester City Council’s Fleet services have a large pool of vehicles and plant items which require regular maintenance, diagnostics and servicing. Join our team to work towards achieving a recognised Level 3 apprenticeship as a Light Goods Vehicle Technician, as well as gaining hands-on practical experience working on our wide range of vehicles. You’ll have a clear career progression plan and join the supportive teams of time served Vehicle Technicians, team leaders and members of the apprenticeship management team who will provide you with guidance and support throughout the duration of your apprenticeship. If you successfully complete the apprenticeship, we may be able to offer you a position as Vehicle Technician, earning up to £33,366 per year.
This is a full time, fixed term role for 4 years, working 37 hours per week from Monday to Friday. You’ll be expected to work on rota basis which include early and late shifts.
What you’ll be doing
During the apprenticeship, you’ll be repairing or maintaining vehicles, mainly LGVs, to ensure they are suitable and safe for staff to use. You’ll move and handle equipment and materials, use a variety of tools, work at heights using steps/ladders as well as be required to crouch in confined spaces. On occasion, you’ll work outdoors to attend to breakdowns and jumpstarts. With the support of the team, you’ll provide advice & guidance to customers ensuring that they are kept informed of progress.
You’ll achieve a professional qualification, whilst gaining invaluable hands-on experience along the way. You’ll spend some of your apprenticeship studying your chosen course at Brooksby college in Melton. You’ll be expected to make your own way there and back to and from the college. learning the theory behind your new skills you’ll be able to put them into practice in the workplace thereafter. Additionally, you will be supported in completing coursework or preparing for any exams.
What you’ll need
With a genuine determination and a willingness to learn, you’ll have experience in servicing vehicles, plant and equipment, which has been gained through work experience, former employment, voluntary work, school or college courses. You’ll be able to demonstrate mechanical reasoning, and practical abilities in relation to diagnosing and repairing vehicles, including the identification of parts and equipment that is required. Using your own initiative, you’ll take the lead when appropriate circumstances arise but will be able to follow instructions and work as part of a team. Understanding the importance of customer care, you’ll strive towards providing the best possible customer service.
Committed, you’ll be able to undergo a course of study and training up to and including apprentice Level 3. You will have achieved a GSCE Level 4, grade C or equivalent, or be able to demonstrate this through undertaking a test at assessment stage to meet this level. As well as having literacy and numeracy skills to complete relevant trade qualifications. You’ll be able to manage time effectively and meet work deadlines. You must be flexible and able to attend evening lectures if required.

The duration of this apprenticeship programme will be 4 years from the date of commencement. Successful applicants must be available to start employment on 1st September 2025.
There will be several stages to the application process. If your application is successful following shortlisting, you’ll be required to attend various progressive testing and an interview which will take place during the months of March and July.
If you have already attained this level of qualification Level 3 Light Vehicle Maintenance, we will not be able to consider your application.
